A firewall is a network security system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented as both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Network firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0VPN appliance\u00a0is a network\u00a0device\u00a0equipped with enhanced security features. Also known as an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)\u00a0VPN appliance, it is in effect a router that provides firewall protection, load balancing, authorization, authentication and encryption for\u00a0VPNs.<\/p>\n

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that is constructed using public wires \u2014 usually the\u00a0Internet\u00a0\u2014 to connect to a private network, such as a company’s internal network. There are a number of systems that enable you to create networks using the\u00a0Internet\u00a0as the medium for transporting data.<\/p>\n
